Pursuing The Dream: Student hurdles proverty, hunger, homelessness & ineligibility for aid

Diego Sepulveda was born into poverty, in Mexico. When he was 4 years of age, his parents moved the family to the United States, in search of a chance to work their way out of poverty. But they were undocumented. The parents could only get jobs in sweat shops. Diego, his parents,& his sister all lived in one small room, in East Los Angeles, where Diego grew up, never having a real bed to sleep in. But, Diego was a smart, high-achieving student. But, this product of East LA poverty & undocumented status couldn’t pay for college, nor was he eligible for any financial aid program, & on top of that, it was a 4 hour bus ride from his home to UCLA—that’s 4 hrs., one way—it would take up 8 hrs of his school day just getting between home & school. College appeared to be an impossible dream. Diego tried to do what he could. He took 3 jobs, often went hungry & spent his nights sleeping on any couch he could find on the campus. Today, Diego is a 22 yr. old senior at UCLA who is optimistic that he will, somehow, complete his studies & graduate with a university degree. ============================================= Thanks to ABC World News & The Young Turks, for reporting this, & thanks to The Young Turks for putting it on the web ============================================= FAIR USE NOTICE: These pages/video may, or may not, contain copyrighted (© ) material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by any copyright owner.
