How To Make Your Credit Card Work For You

]]>

Everybody seems to be just itching to get hold of a low interest credit card. Who would not be? These low interest credit cards definitely offer a lot of major advantages over normal credit cards. Aside from the low interest, other fees like annual fees might also be waived.

Low interest credit card means you won’t be paying more for a credit card purchase. Since there are several low interest credit cards available in the market, it’d be better to first understand how these interest rates work.

Some credit card companies might entice you to sign up for their credit card by offering a low introductory interest rate. This could even be as low as 0%. This rate could go on to up to a year. When this introductory period is over though, you would have to pay the normal interest rate, which in most cases is referred to the purchase APR.

Customers might find these low interest credit cards very much appealing. True enough, these low interest offers could definitely help lower your credit card debts. With these offers, consumers can just transfer balances to whoever has the lowest interest rates. Fortunately for consumers, banks are in stiff competitions with each other. Low or even 0% interest offers can last to up to a year, in a bank’s effort to keep the customer’s financial portfolio.

Not everyone might be able to avail of these low interest credit cards though. Banks usually require that you have an excellent, or at least good credit score. If you do, it is likely that banks would offer you lower interest rates. Banks find it less risky to offer better deals to those who are known to be able to payoff their debts.

Those who have a great credit have good chances to obtain interest rates which are lower than a normal credit card. This could range from 9% to 15%. So if you have a good credit card, you might want to shop around some more first in looking for a better deal.

Having qualified for low interest credit cards, you’ll surely get better introductory offers. Usually, this could be delayed APR for up to a year. If you have this card, you’d be able to payoff credit card balances at no additional interests. This makes it highly profitable.

Low interest credit cards rarely come with annual or enrollment fees. Those who have perfect credit are surely able to take advantage of all these benefits. High interest credit cards with annual fees are usually intended for high risk cardholders, specifically those with bad credit.

However, it should not be forgotten that banks are for-profit organizations. Some low interest credit cards may come with a catch. Some companies might require customers to spend a minimum amount on their credit cards or else, additional fees might be imposed. Also, the moment your low interest rate period is over, which you might not notice pass, the normal and exorbitant interest rates would apply. These are just some of the ways banks earn to compensate for their low interest rates.

Low interest credit cards could really work for you but before committing to any card, be sure you have understood and read the fine prints. Usually, it may stipulate additional fees or conditions. It is best to be familiar with everything about the card first to be able to effectively weigh it against other low interest credit cards offered in the market.

Best Credit Cards – How to Find the Right Card for you

Edit Article |

Posted: Feb 22, 2007 |Comments: 0
|

]]>

On question often asked is “what’s the best credit card available?” The truth of the matter is that there is no one credit card available that is the best for everyone. Choosing the right credit card for you has more to do with your credit card spending and repayment patterns than anything else.

In order to find out which credit card is best you need to think about your credit card usage. For example, do you pay the balance in full each month, do you carry debt over and incur interest and so on. See which of the statements below fits your credit card usage.

“I don’t pay by credit card bill in full each month”

If you carry a balance over from month to month, you need to look for the lowest rate interest card available. Some cards charge high rates of 18% and upwards per annum, others charge less than 10% per annum. The interest rate makes a huge difference to the monthly minimum repayment amounts and also the ease at which you can pay down debt. A low interest rate is more important than a rewards program if you are carrying debt.

“I only use a credit card occasionally and normally pay it off each month”

If you are a light credit card user and tend to pay it off in full each month then the most important factors to consider will be the cards annual fee and the number of interest free days on purchases. Many credit card issuers have cards with no annual fees. They tend to offer less in the way of rewards schemes but as a light user you are unlikely to benefit from such schemes. Look for cards with a low or no annual fee offering instant rewards and discounts. These are partner offers that can be used at any time without accumulating points.

“I buy most things with my credit card and then to pay if off each month”

If you do most of your spending via your credit card and tend to pay it off each month then you may benefit from a credit card offering a rewards scheme. Often rewards credit cards have higher interest rates or annual fees than other types of credit cards. However, interest rates are not important so long you pay the bill each month and the rewards could well exceed the card fee. Frequent flyer credit cards are the most popular type of reward card. A spend of around $2000 per month can earn the equivalent of 4 short haul return flights per year with many airlines.

Other factors to consider when choosing a credit card

Interest free days:

When looking for the right credit card for you, you will find that there are two main types of credit cards: those that offer interest free days and those that don’t. Generally, those that offer interest days charge a higher interest rate after the end of the interest free period or charge an annual fee to compensate. Many credit card companies now offer to up to 55 days interest free on purchases. Cash advances normally incur interest straight away and often at a higher rate than purchases.

Late payment penalties: When evaluating which credit card is right for you, it is important to consider the late payment penalties. If a late fee is charged, what is it? Is an increased interest rate also enforced as a penalty? Some companies more than double your interest charges if you pay late even by one day.

Customer service: It is also helpful to consider a company’s track record in looking after their clients. Why not phone the customer service lines of your short listed credit card companies? Who do you want to deal with? Are you kept on hold for an excessive length of time before someone takes your call or are you answered quickly? If you can’t get good customer service from a company, you should probably forget them. Another important consideration is whether they are using overseas call centres that have access to customer’s private details. If you don’t have a problem with this, fine.

Conclusion

If you intend to use your credit card to pay bills and will pay the complete balance each month, look for a credit card that offers the best value in terms of interest free days and rewards. However, if you are going to be in debt from month to month, look for the lowest interest rate, lowest annual fee and fairest calculation of penalties (because things can go wrong sometimes).

If you are juggling a number of credit cards of varying interest rates and have overall high monthly payments because of credit card debt, then consolidating your credit card debt on one low rate interest card could be the answer you are looking for. By consolidating your credit card debt on one low rate card, you will dramatically reduce your minimum monthly credit card costs and improve your ability to pay down debt.

Debt consolidation, using a low rate credit card, can also provide more flexibility than a personal loan. If an emergency occurs then the credit is still there to use. The obvious risk to this, however, is using the credit and never getting out of debt. Debt consolidation with a credit card requires discipline and commitment to get out of debt.

Best Credit Cards Summary – The right credit card for you

Carry balance over each month = Low interest credit cards

High levels of existing debt to pay off = Low interest / balance transfer credit cards

Pay balance off in full each month / low credit card usage = no annual fee credit cards

Pay balance off in full each month / medium-high credit card usage = rewards credit cards

Low Interest Rate Credit Cards – How to Qualify With Fair to Average Credit

Edit Article |

]]>

Most would-be credit card owners these days have a bruise or two on their credit report and feel they may not qualify for low interest credit cards. Depending on the problem that appears on their bureau they very well may be right. However, a large section of the people with fair credit will qualify for credit cards with low interest rates regardless of their credit discrepancies if they can show certain attributes on the credit card application.

Believe it or not, some of the lowest rate credit cards on the market only require “average” credit to qualify for. Knowing which cards, where to apply and how to accent the “positives” on you application is the key to obtaining these cards. We have listed an explanation for these three tips below.

1) Which Credit Cards to Apply for – Credit card issuers offer credit cards these days that come with all types of bells and whistles on them. Leave these credit cards alone. What you are looking for is the plain old fashion credit cards. This means no cash back credit cards, no reward benefits, travel cards and so on. These cards rarely benefit the “average” user and carry a higher default rate than regular credit cards.

The plain or regular credit cards can usually be found at the end of each credit card sections on most credit card websites. This is because they carry a lower profit margin than the cards with bells and whistles attached to them.

2) Where to Get Credit cards for Average Credit – Low interest rate credit cards are rarely sent to your home in the mail. The credit card offers sent to your mail box are usually less attractive clones of the real cards that have lower rates. We suggest that you use these applications to start your fireplace or back yard grill.

The best place to go to get the low interest credit cards is directly into the bank that offers the card. The problem with this is some of the banks that offer the best rates and terms aren’t national banks and may not have a branch where you are.

The next best place to look for low interest rate credit cards is well established online credit card websites. They usually carry a large selection of credit cards that are exactly like the cards you can get directly at the bank.

3) How to Apply for Credit Cards – The credit card issuers aren’t necessarily looking for a high credit score. They are looking for people with a fairly good track record of making payments and the capacity to pay them back.

Let’s assume that I applied for a card having a 720 credit score and a mountain of debt. Let’s assume that and you applied for the same card with only a 620 credit score but with very little debt, you would be the more attractive applicant in many credit card issuers’ eyes.

Details on the application are a key factor when you fill out a low interest rate credit card application. If you have been on your job 3 years and nine months don’t just put 3 years. List your checking account and your savings account if it asks, most people only list their checking. Finally, look at your credit report before you apply with any credit issuers.

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group reports that as many as 25% of consumer credit bureaus are reporting inaccurate information that can cause you to be declined. If you see any errors dispute them immediately, it may take a month or more to get them corrected.

Have the credit bureau add a comment to your bureau that says “consumer disputes this information” immediately. This will not help your score but will tell prospective creditors why your score is low.

Benefits From Having a Credit Card With Low Interest

Credit card issuers are facing tough competition and one of the best marketing strategies they came up with are low interest cards. Obviously, credit cards with low interest rate usually get the attention of the people and they’re most likely to pay attention to these credit cards compared ones with standard rates and costs.

What are the benefits of having low interest CC’s? Are they really as good as they promise to be? Which particular low interest credit card should you choose? How can you make the most out of your low interest credit card? Let’s try to answer these questions one by one.

Advantages Having Low Interest Credit Cards

- Ideal when you carry over a balance. It is recommended to pay off your CC balance in full each month. However, if you’ve made a large purchase, it may be necessary for you to carry over your balance for the next month. In this case, a card with a low rate of interest is your best partner because you’ll only have to add a small additional fee for the interest rate.

- Ideal for consolidating credit debts. If you own multiple CCs with high rates and you’re carrying a balance with each, it’s best to transfer them over to a low interest rate credit card. This will save you a considerable amount of money since your interest rate will be cut off to a single, low cost interest.

Choosing a Low Interest Credit Card

As a reminder, remember that not all low interest CCs offer the best deal. You need to pay attention to the other costs involved with your credit card as well. Aside from the rate of interest, don’t forget to check out the annual fee, penalty charges, and the type of interest rate of the card. You can verify these costs by reading the complete terms and conditions of the credit.

As part of an introductory promo, some credit cards may start out with low interest rates, but are you sure how long this will last? Will the interest rate still be low when the teaser rate expires? Or will you be left with a card that has a changing or increasing interest rate? Don’t get too excited about the low interest rate offered. Instead, take the time to review all the terms of the credit card.

Making the Most Out of Your Low Interest Credit Card

So now that you own a credit card with low interest rate, how can you use it to your advantage? First of all, keep in mind that just because it has a low interest rate doesn’t mean you should get into the habit of carrying balances from month to month.

Even if you have a low rate credit card, you should still strive to pay your monthly balance in full and avoid the interest rate altogether. However, if you must carry over a balance, make it a point to pay more than the minimum payment for each month so you can get off your debt as quickly as possible.

Having a low interest rate credit card does not guarantee that you’re saved from the risk of credit card debt. It’s how you take care of your credit card that makes the difference.

What To Search For In Low Interest Rate Credit Cards

Edit Article |

]]>

When looking for low interest rate credit cards, there are many factors you need to take into consideration in order to ensure you are really getting a great deal.  Many people do not realize that low interest credit cards may not really be as low as they think they are.  In fact, these supposedly cheap credit cards may be costing your more than you think.

Finance Charge Calculations

So, you think you have found a great credit card with a low interest rate, right?  Well, this might be true, but it may not be as cheap as you think it is.  Be sure to read the fine print on the credit card and learn more about how the finance charges are calculated.  The traditional method for determining finance charges is the Average Daily Balance method.  This method best when it comes to saving you money.  The Two Cycles Average Daily Balance method, however, can become quite costly if you carry a balance on your card from month to month.  And, since you are looking for low interest credit cards, you most likely intend to carry a balance.

With the Two Cycles Average Daily Balance method, finance charges are determined two times during your billing cycle rather than just once.  Therefore, you are actually accumulating finance charges twice in your billing cycle.  So, while the APR may be low, your finance charges are not because you are paying twice.

Pay Attention to the Grace Period

The grace period is how long you have to pay back what you have borrowed from the credit card before finance charges start adding up. Therefore, the longer the grace period, the less finance charges you have to pay.  When looking at low interest rate credit cards, be sure to find out how long your grace period is before you have to start paying.  Twenty-day grace periods are the most common.  So, if you find a credit card with a low interest rate that provides a grace period for this long, or longer, then you have probably found a good card.  If the grace period is shorter than this, continue your search until you find one with an acceptable grace period.  Obviously, a low interest rate doesn’t do you a lot of good if the finance charges begin piling up from the instant you make a purchase!

Consider Annual Fees

Some low interest rate credit cards have annual fees.  This is the credit card company’s way of compensating for the low interest rate it provides.  For the most part, paying annual fees to receive a low interest credit card is not worth it to the cardholder.  Shop around some more and see if you can find some cheap credit cards with the same APR that do not include an annual fee.  Chances are, you will be able to find one that doesn’t make you pay to be a cardholder.

If you cannot find a low interest credit card with the same low interest rate, then you might want to take a closer look at the card charging an annual fee.  In this case, you will have to weigh the annual fee payment against your potential interest rate savings.  If the annual fee and interest rates are both low enough, then it might be worth your while to apply for the card.  Be sure to provide yourself with an honest assessment of your spending habits and how much money you will be able to send to the credit card each month in order to pay off your debt.  The last thing you want to do is just give your money away to a credit card company in the form of an annual fee if it doesn’t ultimately benefit you financially.
