Pursuing The Dream: Student hurdles proverty, hunger, homelessness & ineligibility for aid

Posted under Financial Aid by on May 20th, 2012 1:52 pm

Diego Sepulveda was born into poverty, in Mexico. When he was 4 years of age, his parents moved the family to the United States, in search of a chance to work their way out of poverty. But they were undocumented. The parents could only get jobs in sweat shops. Diego, his parents,& his sister all lived in one small room, in East Los Angeles, where Diego grew up, never having a real bed to sleep in. But, Diego was a smart, high-achieving student. But, this product of East LA poverty & undocumented status couldn’t pay for college, nor was he eligible for any financial aid program, & on top of that, it was a 4 hour bus ride from his home to UCLA—that’s 4 hrs., one way—it would take up 8 hrs of his school day just getting between home & school. College appeared to be an impossible dream. Diego tried to do what he could. He took 3 jobs, often went hungry & spent his nights sleeping on any couch he could find on the campus. Today, Diego is a 22 yr. old senior at UCLA who is optimistic that he will, somehow, complete his studies & graduate with a university degree. ============================================= Thanks to ABC World News & The Young Turks, for reporting this, & thanks to The Young Turks for putting it on the web ============================================= FAIR USE NOTICE: These pages/video may, or may not, contain copyrighted (© ) material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by any copyright owner. These resources are used to support essential student financial aid. The importance and the impact of your support is captured in the following video message from PC students, faculty, alumni, and President Griffith. “What is PC working on?” We are positioning ourselves, in this new economy, for an even stronger future as one of America’s finest church related liberal arts colleges. We are taking the lead in adjusting to the new economy. Your support is critical to our success. If you have not yet made an Annual Fund commitment, please do so prior to the close of the fiscal year, June 30, 2011. Donate Today: bluehouse.presby.edu
